Thomas Concrete Group contributes to improved flood protection in Atlanta

Thomas Concrete Inc., part of Thomas Concrete Group, is supplying concrete to a major infrastructure project in Atlanta, U.S., aimed at reducing flood risk and strengthening the capacity of the city’s sewer system. The project is an important part of the city’s efforts to address future climate challenges and create more resilient water management.

The Custer Avenue Multi-Benefit Capacity Relief Project is a key initiative in Atlanta’s long-term work to manage increased rainfall and an aging pipeline network. At the center is an underground facility with the capacity to store up to approximately 75 million liters of stormwater and wastewater during heavy rain events.

Thomas Concrete Inc. will supply concrete for the project’s drainage system, a critical component to ensure efficient transport and temporary storage of large water volumes. In total, around 52 000 cubic yards of concrete will be delivered.

“This is a complex project with very high demands on quality, precision and delivery reliability. Our delivery is an important part of creating a robust system capable of handling future climate challenges,” says Hans Karlander, president and CEO at Thomas Concrete Group.

With a total investment of approximately USD 156.5 million and an estimated construction period from 2025 to 2027, the project is one of the larger investments in water infrastructure in the region.

In addition to reducing the risk of flooding and sewer overflows, the project also enables the development of a new park area above the underground facility, creating added value for the local community.

For Thomas Concrete Group, the project demonstrates how the company’s solutions contribute to the development of more resilient and sustainable cities.

“Investments in modern water infrastructure are essential to meet both current and future needs. We see great potential in this type of project where concrete plays a central role in creating long-term sustainable solutions,” says Hans Karlander.
