Another two weeks have gone by, and I have completed my second rotation which has been in Sustainability. Short and sweet!
The main focus of this rotation has been on the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). A simplified version of the standard was released in September this year. So, I read it and discussed with Karin Gäbel how the changes could affect Thomas Concrete Groups’s sustainability reporting and which metrics needs to be included. I really enjoyed these discussions, as Karin is very knowledgeable on the subject and there was a lot for me to learn. I also participated in some meetings, which gave me valuable insight into the discussions and decision-making behind the company’s sustainability work.
As part of this decision-making process, I helped produce a couple of graphs using data from the ready-mixed concrete and precast concrete divisions. The graphs illustrated how CO₂-equivalent emissions are distributed across different concrete constituents and EPD modules for the selected products.
I also read a report outlining different tools and approaches that could support the transition towards net-zero concrete and cement. Having studied abroad, I found it especially valuable to learn more about the solutions and focus areas relevant to Sweden. Since concrete is a very local material, the available resources, infrastructure and most suitable solutions can differ between markets.
Although this rotation lasted only two weeks, I had a lot of fun and learned plenty that I will bring with me into my next rotation in the Ready-Mixed Concrete Division!
