As part of our 70th anniversary celebration, we’re meeting some of the employees who have been our colleagues the longest. Read about their career journeys, experiences, and how the daily work has evolved over the years!
Say hello to John Cook!
When did you start working at Thomas Concrete Inc.?
I started working for Bowen Concrete on June 13, 1986. Shortly thereafter, the company was acquired by Thomas, so that is considered my official start date.
What was your first role and what is your role today?
I was hired as Director of Technical Services and most recently I served as Vice President of Technical Services.
“I’ve truly appreciated the friendships and working relationships I’ve built over the years—with Thomas colleagues, suppliers, and industry peers.”

Tell us a little about yourself.
I just turned 65 and retired in April this year. I’ve been married for 40 years and have a daughter, a son, and a daughter-in-law. We live in Flowery Branch, Georgia, with our three dogs. In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors—hiking, gardening, playing golf, and fishing.
What did a typical workday look like for you?
My responsibilities included all aspects of the quality of the concrete we produce, research and development, mix design, and knowledge sharing.
Tell us about something you’ve been especially proud to be part of during your career at the company.
What I’m most proud of is being able to help others by sharing my knowledge and experience, enabling them to grow in their roles. I’m also very proud of the technical team and Thomas’s reputation for quality.
Share a strong memory from your early years at the company.
When I started, the company was a small operation with a single plant and six trucks—a big contrast to my previous job where I was responsible for ten plants and massive production. Here, I could work more proactively and focus on meeting customer needs and ensuring high-quality materials from our suppliers.
I’ve truly appreciated the friendships and working relationships I’ve built over the years—with Thomas colleagues, suppliers, and industry peers. That’s something I’ll carry with me for a long time.
How would you briefly describe the company when you started working here? What is the biggest change compared to today?
At the beginning, we were a small operation that has grown tremendously over the years. The biggest change is probably the company’s scale and capacity—today, Thomas is a player with significantly greater resources, expertise, and market presence.
How was the company culture then and now?
Back then, it was mostly about reacting and solving urgent problems. Today, we have a more proactive culture with structures and teams that are well-equipped to meet future challenges.
What has made you enjoy your work and stay so long?
Definitely the people, the collaboration, and the opportunity to contribute my experience while also seeing others grow and develop.
