The first insight into Prefab

As you know, I try many different activities and get to know our different business units more in detail during this year as trainee. After the weeks at the business unit Ready Mixed Concrete, it was time to get to know the other business unit within operations in Sweden – Prefab. This adventure started with little more than a week in our plant Lane-Ryr, located about an hour from Gothenburg.

When I arrived at Lane-Ryr I was warmly welcomed by Thomas, the site Manager at the Lane-Ryr plant, who introduced the operations, working processes, and facilities. We were also discussing the continual development and improvement work that is ongoing. Further, how this work will be intensified forward.

While entering the factory, Malin who was my supervisor during the entire period, gave me a tour of it. She introduced me to the staff, informed me about safety aspects, and explained the how operations are running and working from a practical point of view. At the Lane-Ryr plant, we are currently producing 2 types of slabs, as well as balconies. During the first days, I got an overview and realized many activities together enable the final production of the concrete elements.

During my time at Lane-Ryr, I got the opportunity to try and get insight into all these underlying activities and could follow the process flow.

Further, I participated in…

• …preparing the goods that are cast into the elements. The goods were put into boxes which were placed at the correct casting station before casting started.
• …our reinforcement factory where we produce much of the reinforcement we are using. The production line is more automized and it was fun and interesting to gain deeper knowledge into that.
• …our metal shop where we prepare the sheet metal cast into some of our slabs. I could try most between cutting metal to welding.
• …preparing for casting which included place frames, goods to be cast into the elements, and reinforcement.
• …During casting where I raked concrete to make sure it reached all corners, marked connection points for when the elements later were lifted, and marked the elements to ease assembly at the construction sites. Also, I participated in restoring the casting station after the element had been lifted, and before the preparation of a new casting started over.

In addition, I joined the team that produces balconies, and I would say this production process was a bit different from the slabs as it was more hand-crafted and less industrialized. When we made balconies, we had to use the drawing and manually place everything before casting. For slabs, there was a laser in the ceiling for guidance. Further, all surfaces were finished at the balconies and therefore needed to be perfect. It looked kind of easy when the others made those surfaces, but it was very hard I can tell.

The period at Lane-Ryr meant that I got the opportunity to test a new kind of work in a new kind of working environment compared to what I have done previously during this year as a trainee. At Lane-Ryr the work activities were more physical which was fun and varying. It was a big difference of course, but for each day I gained knowledge and at the end of the week I know what the next step was and could take initiatives to help. During the entire period, I had my amazing colleagues in team Thomas around me who explained, showed, and give advice. Furthermore, they have given me the opportunity to try everything – no problems at all, only opportunities.

stalverkstadAfter Lane-Rye a period at Product Development awaits in parallel with writing the Sustainability Report for 2022. During the winter and spring of 2023, I will return to the operations in prefab, but at our other plants. More about this when it is time.

See You!

AND MERRY CHRISTMANS :)
