Rotation 1 – Sustainability

We have received an update from our trainee, Clara, about her first rotation! She will continue to keep us updated throughout her trainee program. Follow along!

The first seven weeks of my trainee year at Thomas Concrete Group have now passed, and my first rotation, which combined introduction and sustainability, is now complete. I received a very warm welcome from the entire company, and everyone has been so helpful. A big thank you to all of you if you are reading this!

Every trainee at Thomas Concrete Group receives a program for the year that is divided into different blocks. The blocks are designed to give an overview of the different parts of the company, but also based on what you are interested in. My trainee program looks like this:

  1. General Introduction / Sustainability
  2. Concrete and Production Business Area
  3. Marketing and Communication
  4. C-lab
  5. Precast Design / Sales / Production
  6. Finance / Accounting
  7. International Rotation
A plant stood on my desk on the first day, with a note saying, ‘Welcome to Team Thomas!’

The first two weeks were mainly the general introduction, where we had meetings with managers from different parts of the company who informed us about what they do. As the introduction phase ended, my rotation in Sustainability started, where I get to work for the company’s CSO, Karin Gäbel.

During this block, I am mainly working on Energy Reviews for the new EU standard in Sustainability Reporting (ESRS). It might not sound very exciting at first glance, but it has been so much fun! I have delved into a completely new area and at the same time been in contact with many parts of the company. I have had incredibly exciting weeks. Above all, it has been so exciting to work with Karin, who is very knowledgeable in sustainability and sustainability work. It has been fantastic to see up close.

A very exciting thing I got to do during my sustainability block was to go to Visby for two days. In Visby, the research project Betcrete 3.0 had a project meeting, and Thomas Concrete Group is one of the participants in the project. Betcrete 3.0 is about developing innovative solutions so that concrete and cement companies can implement their roadmaps towards climate-neutral construction. During the two days, the various research projects and their status were presented, and there were many discussions about the industry’s challenges and opportunities. But above all, Heidelberg Materials arranged a visit to Slite, one of Sweden’s cement plants, which was super cool to see!

All participants from Betcrete 3.0 meeting outside the Slite cement plant.

Now my next block within the Concrete and Production Business Area begins! // Clara
