On 25 May, the Family Thomas Foundation, Chalmers University of Technology, and Thomas Concrete Group AB hosted an intimate seminar focused on advancing scientific research and education in ready‑mixed and precast concrete, as well as identifying key research areas essential for achieving climate‑neutral concrete. The event aligned closely with our 2026 theme, “Knowledge Together.”

Concrete’s largest climate footprint comes from cement. Therefore, there is a strong global focus on materials that can replace parts of the cement without compromising quality or performance. One solution gaining attention is glass powder, finely ground recycled glass, that can be used as a pozzolanic material.

Research and Development is an important part of our effort to make the concrete industry more sustainable. Working closely with universities, industry associations, and suppliers, we explore innovative solutions that reduce the carbon footprint of concrete without compromising on quality.

When we think about sustainable construction, energy efficiency and carbon emissions often steal the spotlight. But there is another critical piece of the puzzle: biodiversity. The way we build, the materials we choose, and even the forestry practices behind those materials all shape the ecosystems around us. Yet, knowledge about how different building materials impact biodiversity throughout their life cycle is still surprisingly limited.
