Power BI – More than Reports

Hi again,

My weeks at our financial department at the Group have passed. It has been weeks full of new learnings where I mainly have focused on Power BIporträtt Ekonomi and been working with projects related to different departments of our organization. Those five weeks have really flown by, but times run fast having fun, right?

As previously mentioned, I have been working with Power BI and mainly with Fredrik, Business Controller at Thomas Concrete Group (TCG), focusing on Power BI. Since I did not have any extensive previous knowledge about Power BI it was fun to deepen into it through a bunch of projects. For instance, I have been working with projects related to purchasing, inventory, and development of some reports to Sherry, our CFO. In addition, I had the opportunity to work on some projects related to insights that I gained during this year. In this sense, the opportunities and potential of Power BI became clear to me.

Soon I realized my prior understanding of Power BI was not really aligning with reality. Previously I thought that the core of working with Power BI was in visualizing data, mainly through the development of reports based on inquiries and specifications and managing this technically. But this is not the case, Power Bi is so much more…

BIThe more I learnt about how we use Power BI, the clearer I found the connection and closeness to business development. The reports are finalized products, and those are what most people notice. But the biggest, and according to me, the most interesting part is at the backend and the work that takes place before the actual report is developed. Using Power BI, we can solve problems and continously develop the operations and the business – but we do it with help of data. I believe the combination of understanding the operations, the economic flows within a company and accounting, combined with the technical aspects of using Power BI tools and data warehouses, are making this area so attractive to me.

BarrysFinally, I want to, once again, highlight how warmly I was welcomed to my new department for these weeks. This time by Ida, Fredrik, Cissi, Sherry, and Elin at TCG Finance. I have thrived and felt like part of the team from day one. In addition to great weeks at the office, we also had time for some training sessions at Barry´s which was very fun.

Now I am back at business unit Precast and have started a new period, this time at the Sales department and the Design department. Also, the Sustainability report for 2022 is finished. But more about this in the upcoming post.
